Pond Restoration

Details of erosion preventions put in place 2019

Two large ponds within the Belle Oak Villa community  have suffered from erosion to the shoreline for many years. A decision was made early 2019 to explore methods of putting in place some kind of erosion protection.
The contract was given to Crosscreek Enviromental to undertake work on both ponds using an erosion control system.
Although expensive, this work is vital to protect the ponds from further erosion which could eventually lead to safety & structural issues as the shorelines erode further towards the Villas around the ponds.

Work commenced Sept 2019 and involved the following:

  • Existing downspout connections to the pond replaced/checked and extended.
  • Mini dredges take the sediments eroded from the shoreline and pumped into the geotubes, which then form a contoured natural barrier along the original shoreline.
  • Native grasses and plants can be reestablished over the geotubes, forming a beautiful and defined shoreline once again.

There are many examples of the work done by Crosscreek on their web page.

August:
Downspouts were fitted with new extended PVC tubing reaching into the pond. This tubing will be placed under the new Geotube.
September:
Work has started placing the Geotube fabric around the pond. It will take approx 4 weeks for sediment to be pumped into bags surrounding the pond.

October Update:
Once the Geotube bags are filled on the large pond they will be putting bags down on the smaller pond behind pool # 1 and filling them.
The large pond is taking longer than expected because of the depth of the pond as they weren’t able to get sand pumped into the bags without having to dive down to make sure the pipe was hitting the bottom of the pond.
After all the bags are filled they will be bringing in sod to plant around the ponds.  We will need to keep the sod watered after it is planted for a few months.
The stakes will be removed before the grass is planted.
We are expecting work to continue for at least another month but, hopefully,  it will be complete before the Holidays.
We apologize if any cable lines where cut; Cross Creek is paying for any repairs so if you receive a bill just contact us and we will give you a mailing address to send it to them.

November Update:
Filling of the Geotube bags around the large pond has been completed and work is commencing on the smaller pond.
Work is being carried out on the sprinkler systems around the large pond to ensure they will be working once the new sod is put down.
Please continue to be careful if walking at the rear of your unit.

December Update:
Work was completed on both ponds mid December with the laying of grass over the new geotube system to reform the shoreline.
